1/2 C. shortening 1/2 tsp. baking powder

3/4 C. sugar 1/2 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. vanilla extract 1/2 tsp. salt

1 egg 1/2 C. sour cream

2 2/3 flour (unsifted) 1 1/4 C. finely chopped nuts

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In large mixer bowl, combine shortening, sugar, egg, and vanilla; mix well. Stir together dry ingredients. Add to shortening mixture alternately with sour cream; mix well.

Shape into 1 1/4 inch balls; roll in nuts. Place 1 inch apart on greased baking sheets. Press thumb in center of each ball; fill with your children’s choice of fillings.

Our children have different tastes so we fill the thumb prints in with jellies, jams, preserves, spreads (like caramels, Reece’s peanut butter cups; chocolate kisses; apricot, apple butter, grape, strawberry jellies or jams or spreads.
